HOGE'S TAKE: O'Donnell will go into his eighth season with the Bears, re-signing on just a one-year deal. Cuts could still come if the Bears make any big signings or trades, but these restructures were necessary in the meantime. These restructures freed up about $23 million in immediate cap space, getting the Bears under the cap requirement without having to release any players. Teams don't mind doing this because the salary cap typically increases every season - with 2021 being an obvious exception. There's really no downside for the players, as they aren't taking a pay cut and they get their money up front. That allows the team to spread the salary cap hit over the life of the contract, which creates immediate space, but increases the cap hits in later years. HOGE'S TAKE: One of the easiest ways to create salary cap space is to convert a player's salary into a signing bonus.
